Welcome to Origin Valley
Our farming ethos at Origin Valley is based on Organic, regenerative, and biodynamic practices, leveraging our knowledge and resources to grow hemp at scale, using organic approaches to grow our plants while protecting and increasing our soil health and diversity. Hemp is a dynamic crop and fits well into the organic soil regeneration systems we practice on the farm.
Along with hemp we have 200 laying hens providing kickstarts for our compost and worm farm and a young new orchard that fertility feeds back into, closing the loop. Leveraging soil science, good agricultural practice and gained knowledge we aim to keep life alive in our soils, ultimately increasing output while reducing inputs and sinking atmospheric carbon back into our systems in the process.
We are excited about the carbon sequestering abilities of hemp that ticks many boxes in the world fight towards zero emissions. As farmers we feel climate change closely and so we are on board for including crops in our rotations that show economic return, remediate soil and capture carbon all concurrently. We can grow a cash crop that has numerous applications, while capturing and sinking atmospheric carbon in real time, adding to the farms and worlds push towards net zero.
Origin Valley is a 51% black owned, Organic hemp farm based in the Overberg of the Western Cape of South Africa.
We grow organic cannabinoid rich hemp varieties for the growing CBD and CBG flower and distillate markets. We are one of the first commercially licensed hemp farms in South Africa and the most Southern Hemp farm in Africa.
We started farming as a branch of the Black Farmers Association of South Africa (BFASA) as the hemp wing of their cannabis department. We now farm under our own hemp license but we remain affiliated and members of BFASA.
This Season ..
.. we utilised 3ha of irrigated land as our R&D plot with the intention of expanding onto the remaining 250ha of cultivatable land when needed. We have the available water, soil, and agricultural knowledge to become a large-scale hemp farming operation.
We are focused currently on cannabinoid production but have the agricultural capacity to diversify into the many other industrial aspects of hemp, which many hemp farmers are currently pivoting towards as the markets grow and consumer perceptions around hemp change.
